Designing Your Paver Patio

The design opportunities with paver patios are endless. There are two main design features to remember when designing patios. The first is the design of the actual patio. There are hundreds of different pavers and bricks to choose from. (A list of some of the best can be found on the Paver Choices section of this website) The second important factor in paver patios is the design and choice of plants that you will use to incorporate the patio with the rest of the yard and landscape. Below are a number of well designed patio-scapes with explanations of each.

Patio #1:

This patio has been incorporated into the landscape very well. The plants that have been chosen do not show a barrier between the patio and the landscaping. By using these spreading plants there are no hard lines from the pavers that were used in creating the patio. This creates a softer look to the often hard look of patios

Patio #2

This patio is used in a small yard with limited space. Patios create useful areas in tight spaces that other landscape features would not. One thing to keep in mind when designing patios is what the owner will use the patio for. In this instance the owner is more than likely going to use the patio for entertaining purposes. The designer did an excellent job of creating a space that is open and large enough to have a number of people enjoying the patio.

Patio #3

This patio is used in the entrance of a home. The rounded shape of the patio is the best design feature in this example. Notice the hard edges of the home that are almost erased by the smooth, curved edges of the patio. By using curved or smooth edges with the design of a patio, you can eliminated existing hard edges of homes, driveways, walkways, or decks.
